African American Teacher Mentoring Program

Teachers of color comprise just 17% of the teaching profession in the United States, while students of color comprise over 50% of the K-12 student population.

The AATMP cultivates intergenerational sharing of experiences, guidance and encouragement among African American teachers and educators in the Pittsburgh Public School district.

We need more teachers of color, and when we get them, we want to retain them! The AATMP augments that goal by meeting regularly to connect more experienced teachers with newer teachers to foster a sense of unity, purpose and activism within our ranks.

We also host a number of annual events that are truly becoming PFT traditions!

Annual Events & Activities

Fish Fry (Spring)
Annual end of year event that’s become a legendary Fish Fry (on a FRIday!) with line dancing, entertainment and more. We hope this returns in spring semester of 2022, along with our African American Book Club.
