FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Director of Communications
PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers President Nina Esposito-Visgitis released the following statement in response to questions raised about the new Pittsburgh Public Schools superintendent Dr. Anthony Hamlet:
We remain supportive of the School Board’s process to develop a community vision for our schools by seeking extensive public input and then looking for a superintendent that shares our collective vision. We believe that Dr. Anthony Hamlet does share that vision.
PFT Staff Representatives met with Dr. Hamlet last week and we are encouraged by his commitment to implementing community schools in the district and improving the teaching and learning environments in our schools.
Dr. Hamlet has already begun building relationships with the community. He joined students, educators and school police at Westinghouse, Lincoln, Obama, and Faison for a Peace March in the East End on Monday.
It is unfortunate that Dr. Hamlet had to start his tenure at Pittsburgh Public Schools by apologizing for a mistake on his resume. However, we plan on giving Dr. Hamlet every opportunity to demonstrate his commitment to our shared vision.
We look forward to working with Dr. Hamlet and the School Board to provide every student in Pittsburgh with the quality education that they deserve.
